He has written, co-written, or edited 22 books on Abraham Lincoln, including Lincoln President-Elect: Abraham Lincoln and the Great Secession Winter 1860-1861; Lincoln at Cooper Union: The Speech That Made Abraham Lincoln President; Lincoln on Democracy (with Mario M. Cuomo); and The Lincoln Image (with Gabor S. Boritt and Mark E. Neely Jr.). He is Senior Vice President for External Affairs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
